A root canal is a dental procedure preformed to treat the infection in an abscessed tooth. Sometimes tooth decay or trauma breaks the hard outer layer of your tooth. This exposes the sensitive and soft inner layer of the tooth to bacteria and infection. Left untreated, this condition can lead to tooth loss, infections of other teeth, the jawbone, gums, and other areas of the mouth. In some cases, an untreated infection could lead to other medical problems throughout the body.
Root Canal Therapy is often suggested in order to save the tooth, instead of completely removing the infected tooth. The root canal procedure involves cleaning out the crown of the tooth to gently sweep away the infection within the soft interior. By cleaning the inside and outside of the hard outer layer, the rest of the tooth can then be saved. A post and crown is then placed on the tooth with and the procedure is complete.
